On July 13, 1863, the worst episode of racial violence in American history turned New York into a charnel house.
I have never done a “rerun” on this blog before. But last week, planning out potential posts, I had an idea to do one on the New York City draft and race riots of 1863, which began on this day, July 13, in that year. I did a search of the back catalog and was surprised to see that I did an article on it exactly three years ago, not long after this blog was founded. However, that article was at the paid tier, which had very few members at that time, so almost no one read it. So, I thought I’d post it for the rest of you. I guess it’s a sign that this blog has matured that enough time has gone by for me to have forgotten doing certain articles back in its early days! Anyway, here it is.
