While I was gone: Some images, and history, from my trip. (Part II)

From 18th century graves to Star Trek dolls, here are some more bits of historical detritus from my trip.

While I was gone: Some images, and history, from my trip. (Part II)

Last week I ran this article, which was a round-up of photos—and some little bits of history—from my recent trip to London and across the Atlantic to New York. Enough of you (48%, according to the Ghost analytics) opened it for me to justify a part 2, with some more of the same. This is the last time I’ll torment you with “vacation pics,” I promise you, at least from this trip. But if I say so myself I think we saw some very interesting things, and I’d love to share them with you. All the photos in this article were taken either by me or by Cody Climer.

The header photo is sunrise on the North Atlantic, seen from the stern of the Queen Mary 2. Because of the season and the frequent time changes necessary on the ship as we crossed the Atlantic from east to west, the exact moment of sunrise in late October, 8:38 AM, was late enough that we could get up at a reasonable hour and still see it. Atlantic sunrises as seen from ships at sea are reportedly fantastic, and I’d heard that glimpsing them was something of a tradition on the QM2. Alas, as you see, it was mostly cloudy that morning, so what we got was a luminous glow on the eastern horizon peeking through the clouds. It was still interesting enough for me to take a picture of.
